Kafa Coffee Highlands
The forested highlands where coffee was born
Overview
Kefa (also spelled Kaffa) is a lush, mountainous zone in southwestern Ethiopia widely credited as the original home of Coffea arabica — the coffee plant. The word 'coffee' itself is generally believed to derive from the region's name.
The Kafa Biosphere Reserve, recognized by UNESCO, protects one of the last remaining wild coffee forests on Earth, where coffee still grows in its natural, undomesticated form beneath a dense forest canopy.
Beyond coffee, the region offers cool highland scenery, waterfalls, and a slower, forest-based pace that contrasts with Ethiopia's more visited historical circuits.
