Overview

Sof Omar Caves lie in the Dawe Qachan district of East Bale Zone, about 110 kilometers from Robe town, and form the longest cave system in Ethiopia at roughly 15.1 kilometers, carved out over millennia by the Weyib (Web) River cutting through limestone.

The cave complex has around 42 known entrances and is famous for its towering, eroded ceilings, arched portals, and the so-called 'Chamber of Columns,' one of the most striking natural formations of its kind in Africa.

Beyond its geology, Sof Omar is a revered Islamic heritage site, named after the Sufi sheikh Sof Omar who is said to have lived and taught there, and the small village at the cave's entrance still holds a lively weekly camel market.

Heritage Significance

UNESCO Tentative List: Sof Omar was added to UNESCO's World Heritage Tentative List in 2011 as both a natural and cultural heritage site.
A Living Religious Site: The cave predates the arrival of Islam in Bale as a place of worship, and remains an active pilgrimage destination tied to Sheikh Sof Omar's legacy.
