Overview

Wenchi Crater Lake sits within a collapsed volcanic caldera roughly 155 kilometers west of Addis Ababa in the Wenchi and Dendi woredas, making it one of the most accessible natural escapes from the capital for a weekend trip.

The lake is ringed by forested crater walls and dotted with natural hot springs, and a small island in the lake holds the historic Kidus Yohannes (Saint John) monastery, reachable by dugout canoe.

The area has been developed as part of the government-led Wenchi-Dendi Ecotourism Project, inaugurated in 2024, which added roads and visitor facilities to support horseback riding, hiking, and lakeside picnicking around the crater.
